Farm and park now belong to Marana

Posted: Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

MARANA — The town now officially owns the Marana Heritage Farm and Heritage Park. For several years the town had been developing the area that was technically owned by the state of Arizona. On Wednesday, Marana placed the winning bid to buy the land. It sold for a little under $400,000 and covers more than 20 acres.

“If you drive out there and look around it’s not what you would expect to see from a Marana facility,” said Assistant Town Manager Dell Post who will be working with a team of town staff and the Parks Department on developing the property. “We’ve purchased it now and you’re going to start to see some earth move and some dust kick up and some thing start to happen out there now that we own it.”

The farm holds the Marana Food Bank’s winning gift of a Dole fruit orchard.

The Marana Heritage Conservancy will be part of the groups that will work on the park. There are several plans for the park. It’s now a matter of which one all involved want to develop. Post said he wants to make sure that the park is a place people want to go to. He also points to a natural bowl on the property that could serve as a rodeo grounds for the Western Rodeo Association.
