The Mountain View girls soccer team posses with the 5A Southern Region championship plaque after their dramatic 2-1 overtime win over rival Ironwood Ridge. The Lions now set their sights on the 5A-II state playoffs.

MARANA – Nothing came easy for Mountain View but the Mountain Lions scored a goal with less than six seconds in overtime to beat Ironwood Ridge 2-1 and claim the 5A Southern Regional Tournament title.

Midway through the second overtime the clock failed to restart after a penalty and it took a good four or five seconds for the officials to get the clock going. After the clock started Mountain View coach Rick Ellis joked with one of the officials, “if we lose the game with less than four seconds left I am going to be very upset. If we win with less than four seconds left then I am going to love you guys.”

The Lions did not score the game winner with less than four seconds to play, but it was close. Senior captain Dre Ortiz scored the game winner with 5.9 seconds left.

Jordan Davidson got her head on a high ball and flicked it over to Ortiz who outraced two Nighthawk defenders and blasted a low shot past goalie Kim Schultz.
