MARANA — It looked as if the Riptide was going to cruise to the Continental Ranch Little League Minor Softball championship, but after taking a 7-1 lead they had to hold on for a 7-6 win over the Lions on Thursday night.
The Lions rallied for a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth, but a failed steal attempt of third base ended the Lion rally and Riptide pitcher Karolina Perez struck out the final two batters to preserve the win.
After a scoreless first inning, the Riptide scored three runs in the top of the second. Anmol Patel started things off in the inning when she reached on an error. Perez singled and Addison Gardner walked to load the bases. The next two batters, Addie Rerecich and Alexis Menge, each walked in a run and Alexis Rothe singled in the third run of the inning.
The Lions added one in the bottom half of the inning but the Riptide promptly scored two more in the top of the third.
Layla Cecil led off the inning with an infield single and was moved to third thanks to back-to-back infield base hits by Taylor Waldorf and Patel. Cecil scored on a passed ball and Perez singled home Waldorf.
The Riptide scored their final two runs in the fourth. Sydney Jacob singled and scored when she stole second and the throw from the catcher went into the outfield. Haley Basye singled with two outs and advanced to second on a fielders choice. Waldorf singled her home for the final score of the game.
