The Marana and Mountain View boys volleyball teams closed out the 2012 season with a rivalry match on Thursday night. The Mountain Lions prevailed, sweeping the Tigers 3-0.
The Lions overwhelmed the Tigers in the first set, taking it 25-7. Already leading 18-6, the Lions outscored Marana 7-1 down the stretch, taking advantage of a few Tiger errors and a pair of aces.
Although Marana got out to a much better start in the second set, they scored four of the first five points, it was not enough and Mountain View prevailed 25-13.
After falling behind 4-1 the Lions scored nine of the next 10 points and took a 10-5 lead.
They took control from therealthough the Tigers did manage a 3-1 mini run late in the set to trim the lead to eight, 23-15. The Lions scored the next two points to win the set thanks to back-to-back double hit calls against the Tigers.
The third set was the closest. It was back and forth most of the way. Leading 20-18, the Lions scored the final five points of the match to take the set 25-18.
Ryan Bergsma led the Lions with 12 kills and five aces. Derek Pollitt added 10 kills and a trio of aces. James Noris had 30 assists.
For the Tigers it was Jeff Carranza leading the way with five digs and five assists. Evan Boyack had a team-high four kills.
The win pushed the Mountain Lions past the .500 mark, improving their record to 9-8. They are currently ranked 31st in the state and will not advanced to the playoffs.
Marana fell to 2-16 in regular season games.
