Thornydale advanced to the championship bracket with a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday. First they beat Western 10-6, then defeated Continental Ranch 14-4.
It was the third win in four days for Thornydale after losing their opening game of the event 20-18 to Continental Ranch.
Next they face Sabino Canyon in the Championship Bracket. Since Thornydale emerged from the Loserís Bracket, they have no margin for error. They must win four straight games to win the title.
Marana was not as lucky. Marana beat Frontier 3-2 on Friday night, but fell to Sabino Canyon 8-6 on Saturday to be eliminated from the tournament. All three of Maranaís games were decided by two runs or less. They went 1-2 in the double-elimination tournament.
Thornydale is one win away from the District 5 championship. They won their first game of the championship bracket, beating previously unbeaten CDO 7-4 on Saturday night.
They now await the Coronado/CDO winner. Either team would have to beat Thornydale twice to eliminate them. The first meeting will be Thursday night, the second, if needed, would be on Friday.
Thornydale has no margin for error, but is one of the final two teams standing for the District 5 Junior Baseball championship. Thornydale beat CDO 15-8 on Saturday night and now must try to beat Western two times in a row. Western, who beat Thronydale 3-2 in the second round, needs to win just once to claim the championship.
The first game is Monday night at Arthur Pack. If needed, game two would be played Tuesday night.
Thornydale has a shot at the District 5 9/10 Softball championship. They meet Thronydale Monday night and a win would give them the title and a shot at state. A loss does not end the season for Thornydale as they have no losses in the double-elimination bracket. If they lose they would play again on Tuesday night.
Game one is at Mehl Park, first pitch at 6:00 p.m.
Continental Ranch and Thornydale will meet for the District 5 Junior Softball championship on Monday night.
