The Thornydale Junior All-Stars fended off a late Western rally and held on for a 16-12 win in the finals of the District 5 All-Star Tournament. The win sets up a winner take all game between the two teams Wednesday night.

Thornydale advanced through the loserís bracket and knew they needed to win twice to win the championship.

Thornydale jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Western answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning.

For the second straight inning Thornydale loaded the bases, and their bats stayed hot in the top of the second.

With two runners in scoring position, Jeffrey Northcutt laced a single to score Gabe Gordon. # 10 then walked to load the bases. Mason Alejandro singled, scoring Anthony Alvarez, Ray Vargas blooped a Texas leaguer to score Northcutt and two batters later Robbie Ryan hit a big double to score Alejandro and Vargas and put Thornydale up 9-2.

Western added one in the bottom of the third.

Thornydale added a run in the fourth. Joey Urena singled and scored on a Ryan triple.

They scored three more times in the fifth.

Cosme Garcia walked and moved to third on a pair of passed balls. An error by the shortstop allowed Garcia to score and Enrique Flores raced to second. A passed ball advanced #Flores to third, then scored on a Urena single. A high fly off the bat of Ryan fell in for a single and the bases were loaded when Denin Parson walked. Gordon walked to drive in Urena.

Alvarez was nails on the mound for the first four innings, but seemed to run out of steam in the fifth and was pulled after giving up a pair of runs in the inning.

Western took advantage of the Thornydale bullpen, scoring four more runs over the next two innings.

Up 13-9, Thornydale scored three more in the top of the seventh. Western scored three more in the bottom of the seventh, but could not come all the way back.

The teams meet Tuesday night at Arthur Pack, first pitch is 6:00 p.m.
