With the high school volleyball season less then two months away, the Marana volleyball team is keeping busy. They have been playing in a summer league and in tournaments, as well as having a great turnout for their open gym sessions.
This week, the emphasis has been on the various Dave Rubio Camps at the University of Arizona.
The Tigers had five players, as well as five boys volleyball players, attend the position camp earlier in the week. Of the five, three are incoming freshmen and another is a sophomore.
“They all did really well and improved their skills,” said Marana Head Coach Diane Swan.
Swan was actually a counselor at the camp. She had been invited to participate in the past but had to decline due to commitments to summer club basketball for her daughter Jamee. Jamee is now a freshman on the Colorado women’s basketball team and Coach Swan is able to take Coach Rubio up on his offer.
“It’s fun seeing the kids that just enjoy playing volleyball,” Swan said.
This weekend the Tigers will participate in the Rubio Team Camp, getting good instruction as well as good competition. The Tigers will take two teams to the event. One team will be made up of older players, the bulk of which will compete to be on the varsity roster. They will also take a team of younger players.
Next week Coach Rubio will host an advance camp and several Tiger players will attend those sessions as well.
“I am really glad to see our kids put more into being better athletes and volleyball players,” Swan said.
Swan has coached both basketball and girls volleyball the past three seasons, but will focus solely on volleyball this year.
