Thornydale continues tourney run

The Thornydale 9/10 Softball All-Stars inched closer to the championship bracket of the Arizona State Championship Tournament with a 16-5 win over Show Low on Thursday night.

Thornydale jumped out to a 7-0 lead when they scored three in the second and four more in the third. Show Low answered with a four-run bottom of the third and each team traded runs in the fourth.

Leading 8-5, Thornydale pounded out an eight-run sixth to leave no doubt.

Eight Thornydale batters drove in runs, including Zaylie Calderon, Madison Brown and Ennoy Alvarez who each drove in a pair.

Calderon got the win, while Brown and Jessica Niegocki also pitched quality innings.

Thornydale is now one-win away from the championship bracket. They face Gilbert at 5 p.m. at Crossroads Park.
