Savannah Sartuche was not only the first place girl in the 9 and Under Division at the Marana 5K race on April 28, she was the top finisher overall in her age group. In fact, according to her mother, beating the boys may have been more special than her first place overall finish.
Savannah says the secret to running the 3.5-mile course at Coyote Trail Elementary School was keeping a “steady pace.”
She finished the race in 10:10, which was good enough to finish in the top-50 (48th overall) regardless of age. Over 200 runners competed in the event.
Things have not always been easy the past few years for Savannah and her mom, but the two stick together and Savannah, who attends Estes Elementary School, has shown a desire to persevere through hard times and her ambition to succeed was on display in the race.
Damon Vasiliw was the overall winner, completing the course in 5:08.
Paula Morrison was not only the highest finishing Marana resident, but she was also the fastest woman. Morrison was second overall, finishing in 5:51.
The race was a fundraiser to help the school build a track for the Coyote Trail “Trailblazers.”
