The Tucson Soccer Academy 95 Girls Red advanced to the semi finals of the Far West Regional in Phoenix before finally falling 4-0 to Breakaway, the No. 2 ranked team in nation.
Breakaway went on to win the tournament championship.
The TSA 95 Red has four Mountain View players on their roster.
The game was much closer than the 4-0 score indicated. Down 1-0 late, the TSA 95 Girls made a tactical gamble that did not pay off.
We threw numbers forward,” explained coach Todd Garelck.
The move sacrificed defense for more bodies on offense, leaving the team vulnerable on counter attacks if the attacking team fails to capitalize.
The team was 4-0 heading into the semi-finals.
They advanced to semis with a 1-0 win over Eastside FC of Washington. Priscilla Pimenta scored the lone goal of the match.
Mountain View opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Super Nova, the Idaho state champions and one of the pre-tournament favorites. They followed that up with a 2-1 win over Players SC, the Nevada champions.
A strong start by Mountain View’s Justene Kesterson helped the TSA Red 95 to their third win. Kesterson scored two early goals in the first 11 minutes to put her team up 2-0 on the Chugiak Cyclones from Alaska and went on to a 4-0 win.
