The Thornydale Junior Baseball All-Stars pounded Sabino Canyon 12-2 Monday night thanks to a huge second inning.

Thornydale scored seven runs in that inning and escaped several jams to earn the win.

Thornydale jumped out to a 1-0 lead but it could have been even worse. Thornydale loaded the bases but could manage just the single run. Mason Alejandro hit a sharp grounder to the left side. The Sabino Canyon shortstop was able to get a glove on the ball but could only knock it down. Jeffrey Northcutt was able to rush home from third to give Thornydale the lead.

Sabino Canyon loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but Thornydale pitcher Anthony Alvarez worked out of the jam.

The second inning saw the first eight Thornydale batters reach base, with the first seven scoring home to score.

Two walks and an infield single loaded the bases. Denin Parson scored on an error, Joey Urena scored when Gabe Gordon drew a bases loaded walk and Robbie Ryan came home to score on an Alvarez single.

Alejandro drove in a pair of runs with a single and Seamus Hanover also plated a pair of runs on an unusual play. Hanover hit a hard shot to short. Alvarez scored as Sabino Canyon attempted a double play. Ray Vargas was cut down at second, but the throw to first was high and sailed over the first baseman. Hanover attempted to take second but Sabino Canyon got a beneficial carom off the fence. Hanover knew he was going to be tagged out at second, but wisely got himself into a rundown. He stayed alive long enough to allow Alejandro to score.

Thornydale led 10-0 before Sabino Canyon finally scored.

Thornydale will meet Western on Wednesday night. Western pounded CDO 26-7 in their opening game of the tournament.
